A new year usually means new goals, new diets and new beginnings, so here I am blogging again. This time it’s all about our forever home and the life we are creating here. You see, we bought our county welfare farm in 2017, not really knowing what it was until we were under contract, but I knew with one foot in the door that this place had to be ours, even more so after finding out what it really was.
I’ve always admired this place from the road, on my many back road drives with my camera in the passenger seat, but I assumed it was a old store. Far from it, this place housed those who couldn’t pay their way in life, got lost both mentally and physically and some were overflow from the jail in town. The previous owner fell hard for this place like did over 30 years ago but did little to improve it, mostly from age related issues. The welfare house which sits near ours, had a massive fire almost 20 years ago and it was never repaired, let to the elements. Both houses have basements that once had cells for those who were difficult or worse, declared mentally insane. Back in those days, most were declared insane from improper understanding of their situations. Our forever home and farm comes with a dark history, one that no one would talk about or preserve. But it is our hope to make the old Poor Farm and learning farm and pass on some of the old ways to the next generation.
So, I begin a new blog, one I hope you will tag along as we bring this place back to life, one project at a time. I’ve had many titles over the years but this forever farm will be my happiest I’m sure. I’m the Poor Farm Lady, nice to meet you!
